The books were problematic enough with the white savior trope, but the show really took the time to cram it in our faces, especially with the whole crowd-surfing thing.

The calls to his civillian phone come more and more frequently. At first it was the team asking for him to leave a set of keys to get in the house, but soon it expanded to their friends from school.

She’s a mess, you need to come get her.

You’re the one listed to call.

It really doesn’t matter who’s calling or where he is or who he’s fighting, because Dick made a promise to always watch out for her. It’s how he now finds himself helping a very drunk Artemis out of her seat after tossing fifty bucks on the bar. Her head rolls onto his shoulder as she mumbles some incoherent apology. He assures her it’s ok as he nods his thanks to the bartender on their way out the door.

When he finally gets her up the stairs and through her front door, he somehow coaxes her into the bathroom. She hasn’t been sick, and he doubts she will, but her clothes smell to high heavens of booze and cigarettes. He prays she hasn’t picked it up to help her cope. He also hopes she remembers every minutes of this night.

In the bathroom he helps her stumble out of her clothes and into the tub before turning the water on. She sits and lets the warm water run over her bare skin as Dick watches over her. It’s not even sexual between them, and he doubts it could be even if he wanted it.

His eyes never leave her face just in case she falls asleep, but she never does. He’s certain he sees tears form in her eyes though they’re lost in the shower. And even in her pitiful state, she’s still 15, angry, and head over heels for a boy she can never catch up to.

They sit there for what feels like forever. Artemis’s eyes unfocused and lost, Dick’s never leaving her. When he asks if she’s ready to get out she nods. He wraps her in a towel and she’s already sobered up enough to get to her room on her own, leaving him to clean up the bathroom.

Dick follows her to her room to find her spread out on her bed, the now wet towel barely covering her slender frame. Her eyes are still distant, and she doesn’t move as he enters. He puts her clothes down on the floor and moves towards her bed. The bed that used to hold two people. The bed that still houses a few of his tshirts.

He tugs on the comforter to cover her up, towel and all, and she still doesn’t move. A quick assessment of their - her room tells him that she hasn’t done laundry since the accident, but he hardly blames her as he tried to remember the last time he did laundry. A quick flick turns out the lights and he sits on the bed beside her.

She adjusts as he takes his phone out and waits for her to fall asleep. It’s just after two. She’ll be out within ten minutes. He’ll be home by about four his time, and get about five hours of sleep. Perfect.

Twenty minutes pass and he moves to get up when he hears her hand fall on the bed as if to stop him. Looking back, he sees it’s the only part of her body that’s moved and her head still faces the wall. And she says’s the first thing she’s said to him in days.

“Does it ever get better?”

Turning around, he gives her a quick smile before asking is she wants him to stay. She says no. Artemis always says no. Before he leaves he picks up some of the trash and moves what few leftovers are still good back into the fridge.

He leaves a note telling her to call him in the morning because he thinks he knows something that might help her deal with the pain. He doesn’t sign his name and instead just leaves her with some quick advice.
